Federal grants for 2027: what’s settled and what’s still open

What is happening with federal grant funding for fiscal year 2027?
Federal agencies are funded by a continuing resolution, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027, through December 11, 2026. Congress has not yet passed the full-year spending bills. The same law bars the Office of Management and Budget from finalizing its proposed rewrite of the Uniform Guidance, the rules every federal grant follows, before December 11. Private foundation giving runs on its own schedule, because foundations must pay out part of their assets every year.
Settled through December 11
The continuing resolution keeps agencies funded and their programs running through December 11, 2026. Existing awards continue, and agencies can still post new funding opportunities. Many wait for a full-year budget before opening their largest competitions, so the next round of big announcements tends to follow the final spending bills.
Some programs get their own extensions in the same law, including highway and transit programs funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
The continuing resolution also shapes continuation funding and new funding notices. What a CR means for your award.
Still open: the full-year budget
By December 11, Congress can pass some or all of the twelve spending bills, extend the continuing resolution into 2027, or let funding lapse. The November 3 midterm elections set the political backdrop for that decision, though the current Congress serves until January.
Program by program, the final bills decide how much each agency has to award in 2027. Quillify reads each new funding announcement as it posts and matches it to what your organization does, so you see the round the week it opens.
On hold: the Uniform Guidance rewrite
On May 29, 2026, the Office of Management and Budget proposed a rewrite of the Uniform Guidance, the rules every federal grant follows. Section 157 of the continuing resolution bars the rule from being issued or finalized through December 11, 2026. What OMB proposed, section by section.
Holding steady: private foundations
Private foundations must pay out about 5 percent of their assets every year, whatever happens in Congress. That makes them the steadiest source to build on while federal budgets settle. Community foundations and corporate giving programs add to the same pool.
Quillify searches 129,000+ foundations and 5,000+ open grants together. Name a few organizations doing work like yours and Quillify shows the foundations that fund them. What to do if your federal funding was cut.
