State Justice Institute grants for FY 2027: what the guideline sets

What are the State Justice Institute’s grant rules for fiscal year 2027?
The State Justice Institute published its FY 2027 grant guideline on October 21, 2026. It funds state and local courts, national nonprofits that support state courts, and other organizations working to improve justice in the state courts. Five grant types carry caps from $40,000 to $300,000, every type requires a match, and the board decides awards quarterly with applications due November 1, February 1, May 1, and August 1.
Who SJI funds
The State Justice Institute Act of 1984 lets SJI award grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts to state and local courts, to national nonprofits that support and are supported by state courts, to national judicial education organizations, and to other organizations that can improve the quality of justice in the state courts. A nonprofit that works with courts on procedural fairness, human trafficking cases, criminal justice reform, or court workforce development is inside that line.
The board that decides is six judges, a state court administrator, and four public members. It meets quarterly, so an application lands in a specific cycle rather than a rolling queue.
Five grant types and their caps
Project grants fund education and training, research and evaluation, demonstrations, and technical assistance. State courts and national nonprofits may request up to $300,000 over thirty-six months; local courts up to $200,000 over twenty-four months. They do not pay the salaries or benefits of court employees.
Technical assistance grants are capped at $75,000 and twelve months. Curriculum adaptation and training grants are capped at $40,000 and twelve months. The guideline also describes a Strategic Initiatives Grants program and an Education Support Program; read the notice for their terms.
The match is the hard part
Project grants need a cash match at least equal to the award. A $300,000 request needs $300,000 in cash, from the applicant or from third parties working with it. Funding from other federal agencies cannot be used as the match.
Technical assistance and curriculum grants need a total match of at least 50 percent of the award, of which 20 percent must be cash. On a $75,000 technical assistance grant that is $37,500, with at least $7,500 in cash and the rest allowed in kind.
If a cash match is out of reach, the field has programs without one. Grants with no match requirement explains how to find them.
Deadlines and how to apply
Applications are due November 1 for the first quarter of the federal fiscal year, February 1 for the second, May 1 for the third, and August 1 for the fourth. An application submitted after the deadline waits for the next cycle. Everything goes through the SJI Grants Management System.
Quillify reads the guideline the way a reviewer does. Upload it with your court’s or organization’s own documents and the requirements checklist lists every condition, including the match, with where your draft meets it.
