Can you get an extension on a grant deadline?

Can I get an extension on a grant deadline?

For federal grants, almost never on request. Some agencies publish a policy for accepting late applications in narrow cases, such as a documented system failure or an emergency, and the announcement says where to look. Private foundations are more flexible, and a short, early, honest request to the program officer sometimes works. If the answer is no, the next round or a similar program is usually the faster path.

Who might say yes

Federal agencies
Deadlines are fixed for every applicant. Some agencies consider late applications only for documented reasons set out in their policy, and the request has to follow that policy exactly.
State programs
Rules vary by program. The announcement or the program contact will say whether late submissions are ever accepted.
Private and community foundations
Smaller funders with their own staff sometimes allow a short extension, especially for organizations they already know.

How to ask

  1. Ask early

A request a week before the deadline is a conversation. A request on deadline day rarely is.

  2. Be specific

Say what happened, what is left to finish, and the date you can submit.

  3. Ask the right person

Write to the program officer or contact named in the announcement.

  4. Get the answer in writing

Keep the email that grants the extension with your application records.

Catching the next deadline instead

A missed deadline is rarely the last chance. Many programs run every year, some accept applications on a rolling basis, and similar money is often available from another funder. Quillify searches grants, contracts and community lenders together, so you can find the next round or a similar program, ask "Am I qualified?" before you commit, and put every deadline on your calendar with a reminder.
