Foundations that accept applications

Every one of the 19,390 private foundations that will read a proposal you were not invited to send, built from their own 990 filings. The other 103,000 on file fund only organizations they have already chosen, so they are not here.

Free to browse, no account. Most directories sell you the whole list. The useful list is the smaller one, and this is it.

They say so on their own filings, in a box almost nobody checks. Publishing only the open ones is the point: the gap is weeks of work you do not have to do.

Find a foundation

Search the featured funders below by name, or browse by state and by what they fund.

These are the largest givers that accept applications. Searching all 19,390 of them, filtered to what you are actually eligible for, is what the product does. Read from filings indexed on 7 August 2026; foundations file annually, so every figure here describes a year that has already closed.

The 262 that also lend and invest

262 of these foundations reported a program-related investment on their most recent 990-PF: money moved as a loan, a guarantee or an equity stake rather than a grant. That is one filing year rather than a standing program, and it is one of the few routes foundation money reaches a for-profit company.

What that means if you are a company, including the median amount, which is smaller than the headline suggests.

Searching this by hand is the job. Filtering it is the product.

Free to browse and search, no card required. The part worth paying for is being told which of these would fund you.
